Occasionally I work with people outside of my own projects.
Most of these conversations begin while someone is already building or changing a product and wants another set of eyes on the work for a short period of time. The goal is usually to review what already exists, understand how it is being used, and identify where effort is being spent without producing much progress.
In those situations I approach the work the same way I would inside a product team. I look at what has already been built, how the system operates today, and which decisions are currently blocking progress.
The work usually takes a simple form. Sometimes it involves reviewing a product or system that is already live. Other times it means talking through a decision before something new is built, or stepping in briefly when a team is unsure what to do next.
These engagements are limited in scope and typically last only long enough to work through a small set of decisions.
